In Poland, Jews were told that they were going into work camps but sent into the gas chambers. By June 1942, 1 million Jews were already shot. Approximately 3.5 million Jews were murdered in the death camps. In the last months of Nazi regime, the prisoners were forced to march into the areas still under the control of Hitler. About a quarter of a million Jews died on these death marches.
