What Thesis Statement Is

Thesis statement is a road map for the thesis paper; in other words, it informs the reader what to be illustrated in the rest of the paper. It indicates what assertion the writer is going to make about a subject. A statement of a thesis is clear, restricted, and precise. It should deal with a single dominant idea. It is a declarative single sentence that states what the writer wants the readers to know, believe, or understand. To develop a thesis statement is a significant part of the process of writing an essay. In fact, it is not possible for a writer to write a good essay without developing a good thesis statement. The research paper is much more successful to have a specific statement than to about general things that do not say much. It is not necessary to use several pages for just skimming the surface. To make the thesis a strong one, a very strong thesis statement must be inserted as it works like the “prima facie” or apparent view of the thesis. To write a right thesis statement is like fishing; the writer may have to throw many back before he hooks a satisfactory one; which says exactly what. A well-thought-out statement controls and directs the paper, so clarity and precision are preferred here for a better thesis. Developing a statement of a thesis is a part of the writing process. When there is an assigned topic, the writer should not start the assignment with a clear idea of how to approach that topic; he should not begin with a clear thesis statement in mind. This will only come out after the reader had read the relevant literature, collected and prepared the evidence and thought a lot about what is actually needed to say about the topic.

The writer should make a thesis statement a positive statement not a negative one; it should state what caused the problem, not what didn't cause, in other words what the writer knows, not what he does not know. It does not mean that the statement must be "positive" in the optimistic sense, just that it should be worded as a positive claim, not using terms like "not." Summarily speaking, first of all brainstorming is the essential to determine the thesis statement as it can help in exploring ideas, methods and problems identified in a research to develop it and draw some outstanding result which may imbue others to undertake some sophisticated research initiatives further. This would widely help in designing some hypotheses for rendering the thesis into a better one. Then, the content of the proposed research topic should sparingly be designed and submit it to the supervisor for justifying the merit of the paper. Again, the problem statement should be sorted out so that the potential hypotheses can be easily identifiable. In addition, all important data and bibliography should be properly cited. For the conveniences and proper understanding notes should be inserted in a formulated way which can help in analyzing the problem and reaching some conclusions and recommendations that are derived as finding of the attempted research.
